SUSY PAISLEY WALLPAPER
Armchair upholstered in the Carolina Tree of Life Collection. For the Cloud Forest collection it will be hummingbirds. With its giant finger pads, skin flaps and extended flat humerus, the frog could fly and change colour to merge in to whatever it landed on. Susanna Paisley was awarded the Whitley Award for her work with spectacled bears in the Bolivian Andes. She follows in a long line of women in natural science, including Maria Sibylla Merian, Elizabeth Gould and Margaret Fountaine, who created detailed illustrations of the flora and fauna they studied.

Newton Paisley fabrics tell true stories of unconsidered animals and plants struggling to survive the plunder and wreckage of their habitat. The Carolina Tree of Life collection tells the story of the Carolinas in the American South, where Paisley spent a lot of her childhood. The designer is also working on publishing mini field-guides to accompany each design. She uses only linen, whose production is more eco-friendly than cotton, which is produced in mills in England and Scotland.

Susy grew up in North Carolina in the United States from the age of six, the only ppaisley of an artistic pwisley and a father passionate about ornithology.
Newton Paisley uses linen because it is eco-friendly and relatively local. This is a wonderful conservation success story, as they were extinct in the UK, but acres of flower-rich meadows were planted in Kent, and the bees were reintroduced and are now thriving. Each Newton Paisley main collection comes with a print highlighting the beauty and importance of pollinators.
It is made from a cellulose-based substrate, using recycled wood pulp, and the curtain and upholstery weight cloth is pure natural linen, woven in England and Scotland.
Paisley is also an artist. The designer celebrating rare and endangered species. Mexico is one of the world’s centres of endemism for this group of plants, and includes marvels like the Creeping Devil which actually moves across the desert floor. I always had flowers and animal skins and beautiful wool blankets to make it homely.

She is that rare thing — an artistic scientist, a scientific artist. Newton Paisley already sells a range of cushions and is moving into lampshades and wallpaper.
A field of flax: Bolivia is widely considered to be the most critical country for research and conservation of this species.
The very groovy Pig boutique hotels have Newton Paisley curtains in their bedrooms. The endangered spectacled bear, Tremarctos ornatus, is the only South American bear.
When Susy and Faversham Life met on the Kent Creative Arts radio show, I asked her why she had chosen to explore her creative talents on fabric rather than illustrations. Local trade in bear products has further endangered the species. Despite the global reach of her work, Susy aims to keep the production of her fabrics as local and eco-friendly susg possible and has avidly researched the means.

Susy spent years in the high Andean cloud forest studying the spectacled bear, a mysterious and threatened species and the inspiration for the story of Paddington Bear.
