I believe the key significance of the celebration of any new year is to move forward for greater prosperity, happiness and community harmony and share our joy with others in the society we live. It will help the new generations to inculcate the practise of rich and varied Bengali culture in their country of residence for now and into the future. Living in a liberal, multicultural society we take the opportunity to retain and practise the culture of our country of origin.
Traders and businessmen close their old accounts book and open new ones for recording daily business transactions for the new year. The new neq Bangladeshi-Australians are also part of this cultural transformation intertwined with the local culture to become multicultural. To me it is a great symbol of get-togetherness, festivities and merriment that provides an opportunity to share the joy of the day with members of other communities and strengthen community bondage.
